THE OPPORTUNITIES ARE GREAT THIS COMING YEAR TO MAKE SOME MONEY RAISING WHEAT!

One of the factors you should be really happy about is there are many newer weed control options that could save you money and do even better at controlling your toughest weeds.

The list is pretty long, but here are some of the products you should ask your agronomist about as you plan for this year’s weed control program.

2,4-D is dramatically higher in price than I can ever remember. In fact, it’s so expensive there’s no way I’d use it in wheat this year. The same could be said for many of the traditional wheat products. They’re expensive!

Will new products save the day? Elevore is a great 2,4-D replacement product in the same Group 4 chemical family. It has perhaps slightly better weed control, is easier on the crop, and doesn’t have the drift and volatility concerns of amines or esters. The one catch is it’s not labeled to spray in-crop on wheat. However, you can find the active ingredient of Elevore in several premixes listed to the right.

WideARmatch

This is an improved version of WideMatch that contains the Starane and Stinger you’re used to buying PLUS the new Elevore. Rather than mixing in 2,4-D with WideMatch to broaden the weed control spectrum, WideARmatch is now a much more complete product for broadleaf weed control including kochia, Canada thistle, and many smallseeded broadleaf and winter annual weeds.

Pixxaro

This product has two of the three ingredients from the last product mentioned. It has Starane plus Elevore. So if Canada thistle isn’t a concern and your main weed is just kochia, you may save some money using Pixxaro instead of WideARmatch.

Rezuvant

This is a grass plus broadleaf control premix product containing the active ingredients from Pixxaro plus Axial.

Axial Bold

Speaking of Axial, Syngenta is moving to a new formulation called Axial Bold that contains the active ingredients from Axial and Puma. With a label for application in spring wheat, winter wheat, and barley, along with a lower use rate than Axial XL, this should step into your program in place of Axial quite nicely.

PerfectMatch

Here’s another premix of familiar compounds. PerfectMatch combines the active ingredients from PowerFlex and WideMatch for an excellent grass plus broadleaf control option.

Huskie Fx

Not to be left out of the premix party, Huskie Fx adds the active ingredient from Starane to the Buctril and HPPD herbicide in Huskie. Expect improved kochia control over Huskie alone.

Anthem Flex One last herbicide premix to note is Anthem Flex. It combines the active ingredients from Zidua (the only Group 15 herbicide for wheat) plus Aim. Zidua has excellent soil residual on tough grass weeds like Italian ryegrass. Aim is a powerful broadleaf burndown tool. This combination in some markets may be cheaper than buying Zidua alone.

Teraxxa

This is a new mode of action insecticide that actually kills wireworms. The neonicotinoids just repel them. It’s a big step forward. However, Teraxxa pretty much just works on wireworms.
